Why Won’t My Engine Start? The Top Reasons Behind Why Your Equipment is Not Starting

fuel stabiliser for when petrol engine is not starting

Troubleshooting Your Petrol Engine Not Starting

Few things are more frustrating than a petrol engine not starting, whether is your mower or other petrol-powered equipment. When your to-do list around the garden, farm or estate is already overwhelming, equipment failure can be a significant setback. This article outlines the top reasons why petrol engines, including lawnmowers, fail to start and how to troubleshoot these issues.

Stale or Old Fuel

Stale fuel is the leading cause of petrol engine starting problems. The ethanol in petrol attracts moisture, leading to gum formation and potentially causing corrosion and engine damage. This issue has worsened with the recent introduction of E10 fuel at UK petrol stations. E10 consists of 90% conventional petrol and 10% ethanol, which begins to go stale after about 30 days. This is especially problematic if the petrol is stored in a jerry can or left in the equipment.

To prevent fuel from going stale, consider using a fuel stabiliser, which can preserve the fuel for up to 1 to 3 years.  Additionally, if you plan to store your equipment for an extended period (like winter storage), be sure to fully drain the fuel from the tank, engine, and carburettor.

Top Tip: Use high-quality fuel from a trusted petrol station and opt for E5 for better longevity.

Dirty Carburettor or Fuel

A dirty carburettor can cause starting problems for your petrol engine. The carburettor is crucial as it regulates the airflow and fuel mixture. If your equipment won’t start, check the carburettor and clean it if necessary, as dirty fuel can lead to blockages.

Top Tip: Avoid metal jerry cans and refrain from mixing old petrol with new to maintain fuel quality.

Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plugs

Dirty or faulty spark plugs are another common reason your petrol engine might not start. They may become loose during use or maintenance, or they simply be dirty. Always check that the spark plugs are clean and properly connected, and replace them if needed.

Clogged Air Filter

A clogged air filter can restrict airflow to the carburettor, which is essential for engine operation. If the air filter is torn, debris can enter the carburettor and engine, leading to starting problems and potential engine damage. Regularly clean or replace the air filter to ensure optimal airflow.
